As a boy, Kahu could be found tinkering with old games and computers. When his dad suggested he learn how they work, that set him on his tech career path, starting with a Diploma in Software Development. When the GFC intercepted Kahu was one of thousands of redundancies in the industry.

He took a lateral approach and applied his skills to a different space, working as a croupier at Sky City while continuing to polish his IT expertise. With a little luck and determination, he was able to step into a system admin role, that grew into a senior devops role. Kahu explains that while he was senior he wanted an industry mentor to support his career development. Through whanau Kahu was introduced to 3BF in 2022.

His brief to 3BF was for a remote role that allowed Kahu to move to a new city. 3BF discussed different career options with him, set up interviews and explored other opportunities that matched Kahu’s goals. “3BF was very good finding roles for me that I wouldn’t have found on Seek or Linked In.”

The role he was successful with was with an organisation whose name doesn’t roll off the tongue; NeSi, and it meant Kahu could stretch his tech knowledge while developing management skills. “I help researchers onboard to the Nesi infrastructure, this is combination of 4 institutes – NIWA, Landcare, Otago, Auckland Uni holds the lead role.” He’s learning about the system so that ultimately Kahu can lead the support team.

“3BF go out of their way to find you the role you can own”.
